Dr Ian Shaw
Ian Shaw is an experienced general surgeon based on the north side of Brisbane, Queensland. Ian has expertise in the laparoscopic approach to gallstone disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, abdominal wall and groin herniae, obesity and colonic cancer. He also treats all intra-abdominal emergencies of a gastro-intestinal nature eg appendicitis, cholecystitis, and bowel obstruction or perforation.
Ian is a visiting surgeon at the Holy Spirit Northside Hospital, Chermside and the Northwest Private Hospital, Everton Park. He is also a part-time Senior Staff Specialist at the Prince Charles Hospital where he provides a general surgical service with a particular interest in upper gastro-intestinal surgery in patients with chronic respiratory illness. Ian is also active in his role as a Senior Lecturer in Surgery for the University of Queensland.
Ian graduated from the University of Queensland (MBBS) in November 1994. After completing a rural scholarship in Kingaroy, Ian commenced his surgical career in Edinburgh, Scotland. Ian’s subsequent training in surgery was completed at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). Ian updated a textbook chapter on gallstones before receiving his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2005. Ian spent nearly two years at Basingstoke in the United Kingdom undergoing further training in advanced laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal surgery and liver resection for metastatic colorectal cancer.
Ian’s broad training has included laparoscopic surgery for bowel cancer and emergency surgery for all general surgical conditions. Ian’s current special interests include laparoscopic surgery for gallstone disease, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, laparoscopic hernia surgery and laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of obesity.
